Overview
The Data Rollups tool lets you combine multiple geographic areas into a single custom region and calculate a combined value for the selected locations. This feature is helpful for analyzing data across service areas, multi-county regions, or custom boundaries.
What Does It Do?
The tool calculates a combined value for the selected locations using the available indicator data. This helps you quickly summarize data for custom regions without manual calculations.
Where to Find It
- The Data Rollups tool is available on the Indicator Detail Page in the Location section.
- Look for the Map Tools menu and click Data Rollups.
How to Use the Data Rollups Tool

Open the Tool
- On the indicator page, go to the Location section.
- In the Map Tools menu, click Data Rollups.
- A pop-up map will appear.

Map Behavior
- The map loads based on the current locale type of the indicator page:
- If you’re viewing zip code data, the map will display zip codes.
- If you’re viewing census tract data, the map will display census tracts.

Select Locations
- Click the locations you want to include in your roll-up.
- Selected locations will appear in red on the map.
- Their data will display in a table on the right side of the tool.

Calculate the Rollup Value
- After selecting locations, click Calculate value for this Data Rollup.
- The combined value will appear at the bottom of the table.

Additional Options
- Export Map: Save the map you created.
- Reset Tool: Start a new rollup.
- Copy Results: Copy the rollup results to your clipboard for use in other programs like Word or PowerPoint.
Indicator List Dashboard
- If you visit the Indicator List by Location dashboard (URL ends in
/indicatorlist), you’ll see a Data Rollups column. - A checkmark in this column means the indicator has the Data Rollups tool enabled.

Data Rollups vs. Custom Geographies
The Data Rollups tool is an on-demand feature that calculates combined values for selected locations during your session. Once you close the pop-up, the rollup and its values are gone—they cannot be saved or used in admin tools like Stories or Tiles.
By contrast, our Custom Geographies data service offering creates permanent custom regions for your platform. When a client purchases Custom Geographies:
- These regions are always available as indicator locations.
- They can be used in admin tools such as Stories and Tiles.
